Environmental Handling Fees – Dollar Tree Canada
Environmental Handling Fees
Dollar Tree Canada’s goal is to keep the products we sell out of landfills. Environmental Handling Fees (EHFs), sometimes known as eco-fees, help cover the cost associated with the safe and responsible recycling of end-of-life products through regulated recycling programs. EHFs are often administered by provincially-approved recycling programs and are not government taxes.
Common Questions
What kinds of products have an EHF?
Most products with an electronic component are subject to an EHF, such as lighting, batteries, headphones and headsets, earbuds, computing accessories, speakers, adaptors, electronic toys and much more. For more information, including which products EHFs are applied to, please see your provincial section below.
How much is the EHF?
The EHF varies by product and province. Depending on the province, EHFs may be set by a recycling program, the brand owner, or a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) that is managing the collection, transportation, public education, and recycling of obsolete products.
Where EHFs are included, they are charged based on the transacting store location for in-person purchases. For more information, including which products EHFs are applied to, please see your provincial section below.
Where do EHFs go?
Customer-paid EHFs are passed through to the programs’ PRO to fund the costs of collection, transporting, recycling, and consumer education.

To fund collection and recycling of eligible products, producers of electronics can include the cost in the price of their product or indicate a recycling fee separately on the product at time of purchase.
